Conducting Conflict Constructively

1st Resort Mediation

Text Box: Training in Conflict Resolution
Do you want to have the capability to manage conflict proactively, on-site, as soon as it arises?
In their role as conflict managers, could your human resource professionals ramp up their effectiveness with a few more tools and a little bit of coaching?
Would you like to have your managers be able to deal with conflict before it even gets to HR?
Would you like your staff members to be comfortable with the idea that conflict can be a gateway to creativity and have the skills to engage each other in a constructive way?
Would you like to be able to turn those problem situations with clients and customers into stronger, long-term, more productive relationships?
You already worked very hard to hire employees with good people skills. Make an investment in your organization’s future success by turning them into employees with great people skills.
 While information and theory is an important foundation to learning, I rely on an interactive approach encouraging questions, role playing and working through scenarios that may have already occurred on-site using them as prototypes for problem solving and skills development exercises. In addition, I offer follow-up consultation to mentor past participants as they implement and hone their skills in their daily work life.

Organizational Development
Conflict arises in even the most well-oiled, highly functioning system. When the source of conflict is directly related to the people involved, then conflict resolution skills and tools are the order of the day.
Chronic conflict , however, can be a sign that something larger than what is immediately under the control of the participants is off track. These situations can be great diagnostic tools for remedying hiccups in the way your organization functions. They can be signs that a process, information flow, or some other systemic factor is the problem.
In the same way that you might do an audit to verify the financial health of your organization, an analysis of the structural factors that influence how well people are able to do their jobs can be a short term investment with a long term payoff.

Text Box: If you are interested in Mediation:
Feel free to contact me with questions about the mediation process and how it works.

If you have a particular conflict in mind, your first call will involve answering a short series of questions to inform me of the general circumstances of the conflict. If the other party is not in your organization, I will contact them and ask for their participation in the process and arrange for a time and a convenient place for the mediation to happen.

If you are interested in Facilitation:
Facilitation can be contracted on a meeting by meeting basis or for the entire life cycle of a project.

If you are interested in Training:
Whether it’s with a few individuals or a large group, whether it’s a day long refresher course or a 3-5 day intensive training, I can customize a package to maximize your goals and create a strategy for participants’ success.

If you are interested in Organizational Development:
Let’s discuss what you see as challenges in your organization. I’ll offer a proposal for formal assessment and follow that up with an action plan.

Text Box: Mediation on a
Case By Case Basis
 It doesn’t matter if your organization is a for-profit business, a non-profit or governmental agency, mediation can be an appropriate tool for dealing with conflict within your organization:
between departments,
between management and staff,
between peers,
as well as with people outside of it:
clients,
individual customers,
business to business,
subcontractors, and
suppliers.

Group & Meeting Facilitation
A facilitator helps you stay on track with the business aspect of a meeting by working with the planned agenda and managing the interpersonal dynamics of the group at the same time.
Many organizations find facilitation services useful for strategic planning sessions, project management, joint ventures, or building viable cross-functional teams.
Circumstances where hiring a facilitator would be beneficial include, but are not limited to:
To kick-off the project and cultivate buy-in from diverse stakeholders;
To bring focus to meetings that seem to keep getting derailed;
To get through an impasse;
To find a new perspective and help group members think ‘outside of the box;’ or
To mesh different corporate cultures.
The same tools that work in conflict resolution can be applied to building or to reinforcing a culture of teamwork in a group when misalignments of views, perspectives, or approaches occur.
